OK, the long Labor Day weekend is over, now it's time to update that resume and get that job you've been wanting. It's never going to be easy to motivate yourself to do it, but hopefully with the proper guidance, we can make it less painful. Trust me, if you're in need of money or just not happy in your current job, you'll thank yourself later for it.
To kick off September, which happens to be International Update Your Resume Month, here a couple quick tips for updating your resume:
Be brief - If you're resume is more than a 1 1/2 pages, it's probably too long. Imagine an interviewer looking through a stack of 50 resumes. They will instantly go into scan mode on something so long and may miss the most important elements of your resume. Keep it short and highlight your best qualifications. Besides, you have to leave something for the interview!
Be specific - Be particularly clear about your professional experience - get straight to your best experience and only throw in the other stuff if there is room. This is the area where potential employers will pay the most attention. Formatting is Critical - The way the information is laid out says alot about your work. Don't lose an interview because your resume looks like it was formatted in Notepad.
